The Office of Information Technology’s Unix team provides information technology hosting support to hundreds of applications supporting all aspects of the Executive Branch for the State of Maine.   The team focuses on all aspects of Unix administration on hosting systems, ranging from smaller, unit based systems to enterprise-wide systems.  We provide IT solutions to enable state agencies to support services for approximately 250,000 Maine residents.

  • Perform system administration duties in a large, multi-tenant environment with 24/7 uptime requirements.
  • Be a team member in a team of up to 8 Unix technicians in day-to-day operation, strategic planning and disaster recovery.
  • Provision hardware, install Unix variants, secure hosts, and troubleshoot and ensure a stable hosting environment for some of the most complex systems supporting the State of Maine.
  • Generate, install, revise, patch, enhance, customize, diagnose, correct, and maintain hosts running the Unix operating systems in a multi-tenant environment. 
  • Potentially supervise and coordinate junior technical personnel, administrative and vendor support personnel.
  • Function as a technical advisor to management and other technology personnel.
  • Demonstrate a high level of training and experience in Unix, problem analysis, host performance management, capacity planning, hardware and software configuration and planning, automation, implementation of security best practices and integration.
  • Ensure HA & failover of the hosting environment including regular HA & failover testing to meet system requirements



  • Administer Red Hat Linux, Oracle Linux and Oracle Solaris to support secure and reliable SoM software and process requirements. Provide technical support for these systems in support of OIT customers.
  • Provide technical support for Linux, Oracle Linux and Solaris systems to provide support to OIT customers.
  • Develop technical documentation to educate team members and enable consistent delivery of technical solutions.
  • Automate simple technical processes in the Linux and Solaris environments to ensure efficient, consistent and secure processes across the organization.
  • Communicate with customers to better understand their needs and address issues that they are having with Linux/Unix resources.
  • Identify less-than-optimal configurations and processes to improve efficiency and consistency within the Linux/Unix environment.
  • Communicate effectively with management to keep management informed of technical challenges, issues and concerns.
  • Develop Linux/Unix solutions that meet customer requirements to deliver a secure and reliable product that meets or exceeds customer expectations.
  • Collaborate to plan, develop, coordinate and manage complex projects to achieve SOM information system objectives.
  • Plan and communicate patching for Red Hat Linux, Oracle Linux and Oracle Solaris operating systems to ensure reliable and secure system operation.


MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: To qualify, you must have eight (8) years of Unix administration experience, and analysis, design, and configuration of complex Unix hosting environments -OR- an Associate’s Degree in computer information systems or directly related field and six (6) years’ experience performing Unix administration experience, and analysis, design,  and configuration of complex Unix hosting environments – OR -  A Bachelors’ Degree in Computer Science or directly related field and four (4) years’ experience  of Unix administration experience, and analysis, design, and configuration of complex Unix hosting environments.


The successful candidate will have solid experience in following:

  • Knowledge of and familiarity with Red Hat Linux, Oracle Linux and Oracle Solaris.
  • Ability to troubleshoot issues on Red Hat Linux, Oracle Linux and Oracle Solaris systems and 3rd party software.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with coworkers.
  • Ability to communicate effectively.
  • Ability to automate simple common repetitive tasks in Linux and Solaris environments.
  • Ability to discern technical issues from non-technical user reports such as help-desk tickets.
  • Knowledge of backup and recovery software and techniques.
  • Knowledge of operating system security software and techniques.
  • Ability to train personnel in all phases of system support, utilization and applications.
  • Ability to effectively manage projects.
  • Ability to research and make recommendations to management on technical issues.

Preference will be given to individuals who have experience in the following areas:

  • Experience with Enterprise Red Hat Linux 5, 6 and 7
  • Experience with Oracle Linux 6
  • Experience with Solaris 9 & 10
  • Experience with Solaris Zones
  • Experience with Unix security best practices
  • Experience with proven patching methodologies
  • Experience with proven performance and monitor configuration
  • Experience with Oracle Exadata systems.
  • Experience with Oracle VM running on Exalogic
  • Experience with RH Satellite.
  • Experience with Configuration management tools, e.g. Chef, Puppet, Ansible.

JOB CLASS CODE: 0929         PAY GRADE: 26        SALARY: $53,414.40 - $72,529.60/annually*

*Includes a 15% recruitment and retention salary adjustment and eligibility for a 5% annual training bonus



The value of State’s share of Employee’s Retirement:  14.47% of salary for BU positions.  The value of State-paid Dental Insurance:  $14.31 biweekly.  The value* of State-paid Health Insurance:

  • Level 1: 100% State Contribution (employee pays nothing):  $461.75 biweekly
  • Level 2: 95% State Contribution (employee pays 5%):  $438.66 biweekly
  • Level 3: 90% State Contribution (employee pays 10%):  $415.58 biweekly
  • Level 4: 85% State Contribution (employee pays 15%):  $392.49 biweekly

*The level of the actual value of state paid Health Insurance will be based on the employee’s wage rate and status with regard to the health credit premium program.
