OVERVIEW:

The Department of Administrative and Financial Services (DAFS) Office of Information Technology (OIT) provides information technology support to over 13,000 employees.  OIT oversees large scale enterprise applications that support the critical and diverse business needs of the State of Maine and its agencies.

 

The State of Maine is in the process of upgrading its core network infrastructure to the latest Cisco systems. This technology advance will bring the State of Maine to a state-of-the-art network infrastructure. 

 

ABOUT THE POSITION:

The Office of Information Technology is seeking an experienced Network Engineer who is highly proficient in Cisco LAN/WAN networking with further experience in a Cisco centric data center. The preferred candidate will also be familiar with existing and emerging implementation of on premise and cloud computing data center environments, load balancing, and firewall systems. This is a highly technical position with supervisory requirements.  The selected candidate will be responsible to predict, and prevent negative impacts to the State of Maine network.  The selected candidate will be responsible for proactive engagement and ownership of cross functional performance issues throughout the Maine technology environment.  Strong teamwork and customer service and communication skills are a must.

The selected individual will join the Maine IT Network Service Team, as a contributing team member giving technical direction to other highly qualified IT Cisco and network experts and will assist in engineering, installing, and maintaining enterprise level core Cisco networks.   

WHAT WILL YOU DO?

  • Engage on project and work with IT program needs that require Cisco wired and wireless capabilities.
  • Perform a full range of system administration functions from design, acquire, configure, install, monitor, and maintain Cisco routed networks and switch fabric as well as Cisco Identity Service Engine (ISE), DNA Center, Stealthwatch and the Cisco Unified Computing System environment.
  • Share technical knowledge about Cisco switches and routers and other data communication software and hardware. This includes data center hardware and software.
  • Develop complex reports and provide solutions to current network slowness or crashes.
  • Develop and maintain configuration standards, documentation of network devices, including servicing and upgrading of equipment. 
  • Create and maintain overall network topologies and makes appropriate changes when design changes.
  • Evaluating, developing and implementing policies defining enterprise level Cisco’s Identity Service Engine (ISE) environments.  Possess prior experience in Cisco DNA center or Cisco Prime infrastructure.
  • Utilizing network performance monitoring tools to identify trends and correcting system bottle necks where they exist.
  • Engineering, maintenance, troubleshooting all aspects of Cisco wired and wireless networks.
  • Engineering Data Center, WLAN, WAN, MAN and LAN topology designs.
  • Collaborating with executive members of Maine OIT and other State agencies to develop solutions to emerging technological needs as well as resolution of network degradation.
  • Provide supervisory and leadership skills and establish development opportunities for technical personnel as well as provide administrative and vendor support.
  • Provide key technical knowledge and offer suggestions to other team players and senior IT advice to our leaders to inform best practices and decision-making.
  • Take ownership of issues and problems, and work problems through to resolution.

To be successful the selected candidate must be highly trained and experienced in Cisco routing, switching and management systems, be able to solve complex network issues, provide sound judgement and analysis, and offer viable solutions.  This role requires an understanding of networking performance management/capacity planning, hardware and software configurations, integrations, and all facets of implementation.

Work is performed under limited supervision. This position is in Augusta, Maine. The Network Services Group requires 24x7 hardware support. This requires the position to be on-call in a rotation format.

  • Ability to perform research and make recommendations to management on technical computer issues.
  • Ability to motivate people and work to create effective teams.

 

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

A minimum of 10 years of a combination of related post-secondary education, technical certifications, or technology related work experience.  Related training, internship experience etc. may be credited as related experience on a month-per-month basis.

 

Preference will be given to individuals with that can demonstrate a track record of cross functional customer service, strong team player and communication skills.

*Includes a 15% recruitment and retention salary adjustment and eligibility for a 5% annual training bonus

The value of State’s share of Employee’s Retirement:  14.11% of salary for BU positions.  The value of State-paid Dental Insurance:  $14.60 biweekly.  The value* of State-paid Health Insurance:

 

  • Level 1:  100% State Contribution (employee pays nothing):  $470.99biweekly
  • Level 2:    95% State Contribution (employee pays 5%):  $447.44 biweekly
  • Level 3:    90% State Contribution (employee pays 10%):  $423.89 biweekly
  • Level 4:      85% State Contribution (employee pays 15%):  $400.34 biweekly

 

*The level of the actual value of state paid Health Insurance will be based on the employee’s wage rate and status with regard to the health credit premium program.
