The MaineIT Information Security Office (ISO) is seeking a Security Architect to serve as the technical advisor for all security-related issues. This position consults with all MaineIT teams responsible for operational support, project teams dealing with security components and agencies needing guidance in the area of security planning.

The position will be operational and strategic in nature, this position will strive to provide guidance during the beginning stages of projects in order to avoid security decisions that will serve to weaken the state of Maine’s security posture. To this end, the Security Architect will attend Project Design Review sessions as requested and participate on a wide variety of project teams that must evaluate security tools, strategies and vendors.

The Security Architect will be part of the ISO’s Security Integration Services Division and will serve as a key technical advisor to the State of Maine’s Chief Information Security Officer (CISO).




The Security Architect must possess a solid understanding of cyber security principles and methods, threats and information security monitoring and enforcement tools and techniques. Additionally, the ideal candidate for this position will be familiar with intrusion detection systems, intrusion analysis, security information event management platforms, endpoint threat detection tools, and security operations ticket management.

This position is highly trained and has experience in computer and systems programming, problem analysis, risk management with regards to weighing risk with business need, security and networking performance management and capacity planning, as well as hardware and software configuration planning, integration, and implementation.

This position will be responsible in assisting in developing a roadmap to improve the maturity of the ISO in the areas of identification, protection, detection, response, and recovery. This position will also be responsible for ensuring that all systems and data conform to current security standards. An understanding of industry standards (NIST 800-53, ISO 27001) as well as regulatory requirements (HIPPA, PCI-DSS, PUB-1075, CJIS, Etc.) will be beneficial

The Security Architect is a demanding position that requires constant learning and attentiveness to security-related events, both local and world-wide.

Work is performed under limited supervision.


  • Ability to effectively communicate verbally and written across all levels of business and technical entities within organization.
  • Ability to work multiple projects and priorities in an ever demanding and changing environment.
  • Ability to work as part of a team to help drive change and improve State of Maine’s security posture and maturity.
  • Knowledge of technical security best practices, in dealing with endpoint, server, and network security.
  • Ability to provide guidance and recommendations from a group comprised of subject matter experts in solving technical architectural issues.
  • Knowledge of information security best practices, in dealing with sensitive data (PII, PHI, etc.)
  • Knowledge of various programming languages and security programming best practices.
  • Ability to assist security operation center with integrations of security tools and diagnosing technical issues with hands on experience.
  • Stay up to date on information technology trends and security standards.
  • Knowledgeable on adopting strategies for the use of cloud services (AWS, GCP, Azure) and hybrid cloud security.
  • Experience with the following security tools/processes: Intrusion Prevention System (IPS), Intrusion Detection Systems (IDS), SIEM, NAC, Antivirus/Malware Detection, Endpoint Detection and Response, Vulnerability Scanning, Dynamic Application Scanning, Incident Response, Digital forensics.


A minimum of 10 years of a combination of related post-secondary education, technical certifications, or technology related work experience.  Related training, internship experience etc. may be credited as related experience on a month-per-month basis.

*Includes a 15% recruitment and retention salary adjustment and eligibility for a 5% annual training bonus



The value of State’s share of Employee’s Retirement:  14.11% of salary for BU positions.  The value of State-paid Dental Insurance:  $14.60 biweekly.  The value* of State-paid Health Insurance:


  • Level 1:  100% State Contribution (employee pays nothing):  $470.99biweekly
  • Level 2:    95% State Contribution (employee pays 5%):  $447.44 biweekly
  • Level 3:    90% State Contribution (employee pays 10%):  $423.89 biweekly
  • Level 4:      85% State Contribution (employee pays 15%):  $400.34 biweekly


*The level of the actual value of state paid Health Insurance will be based on the employee’s wage rate and status with regard to the health credit premium program.
