The Department of Administrative and Financial Services (DAFS) provides critical communication to over 13,000 employees. MaineIT oversees large scale enterprise applications and computing infrastructure that supports the critical and diverse business needs of the State of Maine executive branch and its agencies.


ABOUT THE JOB:

MaineIT Communications Manager and Internship Coordinator will lead MaineIT’s communications and strategic partnership with key stakeholders in two key service areas. The role will lead, coordinate, and support various high-level service efforts, based around evolving needs of MaineIT and the State of Maine’s CIO’s key initiatives. Major areas of focus include communications with internal and external customers involving current and emerging technology (hardware and software) which impacts the key customers which is made of all State of Maine agencies.  This role will also include standardizing and keeping current the public facing MaineIT Image (websites & social media sites) while formalizing presentation engagements by MaineIT staff, engagement with MaineIT workforce efforts including Lunch and Learns/Tech Talks, responsibility for MaineIT’s social media presence, communication involving service disruptions and restoration efforts, and support for communicating product development. The position will manage MaineIT communications on strategic issues, in partnership with the DAFS Communication’s Office, which may include press releases, speech writing, graphic design support, updating web and social media platforms, and providing timely customer or stakeholder communications. The position will also coordinate communications and expanded partnerships between OIT stakeholder groups and other key partners who may include the business community, education institutions, non-profit sector, foundations, state officials, municipalities, legislators, and other key stakeholders.

Additionally, this role assumes the responsibility of managing the MaineIT internship program for college students on a regular basis. This involves recruiting internship candidates, coordinating interviews, communicating with stakeholders, and facilitating a quality rich experience for prospective graduates interested in a career with MaineIT.



  • Strong communications and/or public relations background with excellent writing and oral communication skills, and experience with producing quality products in digital and social media.
  • Strong administrative and organizational skills and at least five years of program management or relevant communication, marketing, and project coordinator experience and a demonstrated aptitude for technology.
  • Ability to partner with all state communications professionals and key IT leaders, including IT Directors, academic representatives, student groups, and others. Experience with academic partnerships is helpful.
  • Exceptional skills with virtual and in person professional meeting facilitation skills and experience is preferred.
  • Knowledge of and experience with policy issues, legislative processes and state government preferred.
  • Four-year bachelor’s degree in business, marketing, communications, or comparable area of study.




A four-year college degree in business, marketing, communications or comparable area of study AND a demonstrated aptitude for technology with a focus on customer service in a highly visible workspace.

5 years of experience in working in a public facing communications role.

JOB CLASS CODE: CH 28  POSITION: 015108320  PAY GRADE: CA 28 - ($62,878.40 – $85,883.20/yr.)*

   *Includes a 10% recruitment and retention salary adjustment.



The bi-weekly dollar values of some State-paid benefits for full-time employees include: $14.60 for dental insurance; 17.96% of employee’s pay towards retirement; and, depending on the employee’s annual pay, at least 85% ($412.23) of health insurance premiums (more information is available here). Participation in the Health Premium Credit Program can decrease the employee’s cost of health insurance by 5%.

*The level of the actual value of state paid Health Insurance will be based on the employee’s wage rate and status with regard to the health credit premium program.
