The Office of Information Technology’s (OIT) Linux support team provides information technology hosting support for hundreds of applications for executive branch agencies of the State of Maine.   The team focuses on all aspects of Linux administration, including but not limited to automation, troubleshooting, design and implementation.  Our work enables state agencies to provide services for residents throughout the State of Maine. 

This position has occasional responsibilities to work on physical servers in the Augusta Maine area - the successful candidate will need to be able to commute to data centers in a timely manner.

  • Performing Red Hat and Oracle Linux system administration duties in a large, multi-tenant environment with 24/7 uptime requirements.
  • Being a team member in a team of up to 8 Linux technicians in day-to-day operation, strategic planning, documentation and disaster recovery.
  • Provisioning hardware, installing Linux distributions, hardening hosts, automating tasks, troubleshooting and ensuring a stable hosting environment for some of the most complex systems supporting the State of Maine.
  • Generating, installing, revising, patching, enhancing, customizing, diagnosing, correcting, and maintaining hosts running Linux operating systems in a multi-tenant environment. 
  • Functioning as a technical advisor to management and other technology personnel and communicating with customers to better understand their needs.
  • Demonstrating a high level of training and experience in Linux, problem analysis, host performance management, capacity planning, hardware and software configuration and planning, automation, implementation of security best practices and integration.
  • Developing Linux solutions in collaboration with other OIT subject matter experts that meet customer requirements,delivering a secure and reliable product that meets or exceeds customer expectations. 

  

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: 

A minimum of 5 years combination of technology related work experience, technical certifications, or related post-secondary education.  

The successful candidate will have solid experience with: 

  • Troubleshooting issues on Red Hat Enterprise Linux, Oracle Linux systems and 3rd party software
  • Automating simple, common repetitive tasks in Linux environments
  • Discerning technical issues from non-technical user reports, including help-desk tickets
  • Backup and recovery software techniques
  • Training personnel in all phases of system support, utilization, and applications
  • Researching and making recommendations to management on technical issues
  • Managing projects
  • Establishing and maintaining working relationships with coworkers
  • Communicating effectively

 

Preference will be given to individuals who have experience in the following areas: 

  • System administration in Red Hat Enterprise Linux, Oracle Linux
  • System vulnerability management and automation
  • System performance monitoring and tuning
  • Oracle Exadata, Exalogicand Private Cloud Appliance (PCA) 
  • Server virtualization platforms
  • Configuration management tools, e.g. Chef, Puppet, Ansible

SALARY:  

JOB CLASS CODE: 0929   POSITION: 020002936   PAY GRADE: 26  SALARY: $55,853.00 - $75,420.80/Annually 

*Includes a 15% recruitment and retention salary adjustment and eligibility for a 5% annual training bonus* 

  

BENEFITS: 

The bi-weekly dollar values of some State-paid benefits for full-time employees include: $14.60 for dental insurance; 14.11% of employee’s pay towards retirement; and, depending on the employee’s annual pay, at least 85% ($400.34) of health insurance premiums (more information is available here).
